There are 2 approaches, which seem to be used by hackers:

My personal preference is to the 2nd one.
Cutting off plastic with a knife and using some pwm-fan looked hacky.
Furthermore, an approach with brushless motors makes it possible to "upgrade" the device, if we need sth. with more punch.
